Learn How To Draw - What Equipment Do I Need?


You don't need any fancy or costly equipment to learn how to draw.

All you need is a piece of clean paper to draw on and a pencil, or a pen...

White paper is great to use for drawing but any light colored paper can be used. The idea is to get plenty of contrast between the drawing marks and the paper... so choose carefully and make the best of what is available.

When you learn to draw there are plenty of alternative drawing tools to choose from... pencils, ink pens, crayons, chalks and paints.

There are huge ranges different pencils to choose from... including graphite, charcoal, water-soluble, colored pencils and more.

There are different inks you can use... India ink, writing ink and acrylic inks.

There are so many alternatives in an art store to tempt you to buy. When you start to learn to draw...

"Avoid fancy, expensive drawing equipment. Get familiar with just one drawing medium... use a basic pencil, pen or a brush"

Don't try to draw like Leonardo Da'Vinci... stay away from complex studies like figure drawing and portraits. Avoid technical subjects like planes, trains and cars.

Use simple drawing tools... pick up a graphite pencil, a ball-pen or ink pen and draw whatever you can, as many times as you can. Draw on any scrap of paper you can find.

Practice making different marks with your pencil... draw dots, dashes and lines.

See how your pen draws circles, arcs and curves.

Learn to shade with dashes. Learn to draw freehand outlines with lines, circles and curves. Let drawing become natural to you... Scratch, scribble and sweep the pencil across the page as if it were an extension of your arm.

Use whatever drawing tools you have close to hand and you will learn how to draw... You will become a drawing expert.
