How to Draw a Classic Witch

The drawing of witches is something that can be achieved through the study of classic witches and learning how to draw the basics of one is the way to go for witch drawing.

First you start off with drafting some sketch ideas together, these need not be detailed as they can just serve as visual ideas and helpful references for your main witch drawing, I always try and do a good few sketches first, so that I can pick and choose how my design will look in the end. Thumbnail sketches help you better when you start to get an idea and work it through with quick drawings.

Then you select your best idea out of them sketches and start to develop that witch drawing by filling in some of the details like the hat, the features of the witches face and the black gown that classic witches wear, it is just about defining the features here and playing around with them at this stage as we want to build on our witch design by finding more design elements that work well.

If you take a good look online, maybe do a Google image search for classic witches or even black witches, this might bring up some good reference images for you to draw from. The details are important for your witch drawing to look like a witch and not something else entirely, an option could be to include a witches broom and a black cat somewhere against your drawing so that it relates to the subject.

After this step, you begin to strengthen the pencil lines to make them more solid and start to clean up some of the rough pencil marks, and then the sources of light you begin to work out where that is going to come from, you may add a few light sources so that light hits the character from a few angles and the dark areas are recessed within the witches clothing. This also sets the drawing up for the next optional step of inking your pencil drawing with a black fine line pen or something quite similar to darken everything and the rubbing out of the pencils graphite makes the drawing look very clean and professional.

You should have a good witch drawing now and one that you can colour if you wish later on with the standard green pale face complexion and black to grey mid tones on her clothing.

Step by Step, How to Draw Faces - The First, Most Important Step to Take

How do you draw faces step by step?

Well, there's a little more to it than simply drawing. You may not realize it, but our brain's do a lot more to sabotage our drawing skills than most people think.

And not just by the annoying part of us that repeatedly tells us to give up either. In fact, this only happens because another part of our brain's stops us drawing what we see, and instead draws what the brain expects to see.

Don't believe me?

OK, think of the image of a head for a second.

Got it? I bet what you're seeing in your mind is just a general shape of a head, with a few normal features like eyes, a nose, ears and a mouth. Right?

Could you draw that face? Probably. Could you make it look realistic? Probably not.

And it's not because you can't draw, but because your brain hasn't filled in any details for that mental image you've got there. In face, your brain likes to assign general "shapes" and "symbols" to everything it sees.

And when we're trying to draw photorealistic faces...well, at best, it doesn't help. Usually though, it does a right number on us, and we end up drawing something....that's not really a face at all.

If you've tried drawing a face before, you probably know what I mean by that. Not good, is it?

Well, thankfully there is a way to get round this problem. And if you're learning how to draw faces step by step, then this is the first step you wanna take.

OK, grab a picture of someone. Don't draw it yet.

Turn it upside down. Now draw it.

Don't worry about how badly you think you're doing. No-one starts as a master, and everyone who gets into drawing needs to go through this same thing.

Thing is about drawing an upside down face...it messes up our brain's way of symbolizing everything.

Suddenly, it has no idea what you're drawing, and you're free to draw what you actually see. It will seem very weird to draw an upside down face, but trust me, it will only help you become the amazing artist you've always wanted to be.

It will likely take you a while to get the upside down details of the face correct, even to get the upside down eyes, mouth and everything else there is on a human face right.

But of course, turning a picture upside down isn't gonna turn you into an expert artist all by itself.
It's just the first step remember, in the whole process of learning step by step, how to draw faces.

If you're serious about wanting to be able to draw faces and photorealistic portraits well, then I recommend you go and check out http://www.DrawingPencilPortraits.net at the very least. Even if you do nothing else...

How to Draw People Cartoons Even If You Are a Beginner

Learning how to draw people cartoons is always going to be challenging for new artists, but with practice and proper tips they can always succeed. The joy of creating cartoon drawings of people can be really overwhelming. The following tips can help you progress effectively as a drawing artist.

The first thing is to give attention to different proportions. In order to draw the human body, whether is realism or in cartoons, it is important to have a clear understanding of the proportion of different body parts. Things to note include points like, a man usually is about 7 head high, the width of the waist is around one and a half time that of the human face, and much more. You can learn a lot of such crucial points from an anatomy book.

When you draw cartoons, you can mostly override lot of these rules. But if you want to break the rules, you should first be aware of them.

When learning how to draw people cartoons, the eyes should be drawn to express the person's state of mind. Both eyebrows and lips are of equal importance. It would help if you make it a habit to observe people and learn how their facial expressions reveal their emotions. Learning this aspect of cartoon drawing or realistic drawing, it would add to your toolkit of creating characters.

You can draw by taking your own had as one of the models and draw it from different angles. And when you are drawing people cartoons, the complexity can be reduced by making your character wear gloves.

The next thing to learn when practicing how to draw people cartoons is the importance of shadows. You can benefit by using shadows by adding depth to any drawing. However, it takes time to draw manga cartoons accurately and elaborately with shadows. You can work around it by adding shadow patches around the feet of the character. And, if a shadow is not added to the character, it may seem to be floating in the air.

The next thing to take care when you learn to draw manga is to practice from real life. How to Draw - Some Tips for Young Artists

If you want to learn how to draw, you don't just want know how to do "nice" drawings, and you don't want to learn how to copy somebody else's drawings. You want to create great drawings of your very own, don't you?

So what does it take?

It actually takes less magic than most people think.

I don't know who started the myth that only a few especially talented people can learn how to draw. There are even some art teachers out there who believe that.

But if you learned how to draw the alphabet, and are able to write a sentence that other people can read, you can learn how to draw. It just takes lots of practice, and some guidance from people who have learned a few tricks.

In a way it's a lot like learning to play baseball - you need to train your eye to see better than you ever have before, and you need to train your fingers and hands to move the way you want them to.

The first time you took a swing at a baseball, you probably missed. So don't expect to become a professional artist overnight.

Now, does that mean that everyone who has the patience and the willingness to learn will become a famous artist?

No, not necessarily. It means that if you are willing to practice and to make mistakes, you will very soon be drawing far better than just about anyone you know, and your friends and family and teachers will be amazed.

People may even ask you for copies of your drawings, beg you to make special ones just for them, and request that you make drawings for the school newsletter or your club's brochure.

So even if you don't become world famous, you can still get a huge amount of personal satisfaction from your drawings. You can also give wonderful, thoughtful gifts to people you care about, without spending hardly any money.

Soon, your drawings, (after you have practiced just a little), will seem almost magical to the people who see them.

Materials

It doesn't cost hardly anything to learn to draw and create wonderful works of art. To start out, all you need is some cheap paper without lines (copy paper is fine) and some pencils. The #2 pencils that are used in schools are perfectly OK - you don't need to go to the art store and buy special ones.

You should find a good eraser, though, because the ones that come with your pencils are not big enough, and soon wear out.

That's it! That's all the materials you need to draw.

What's the first thing you need to do? Find something that you would enjoy drawing. It should be something fairly simple, like a cup or a book.

Sit and look at this object very closely, and notice things you usually don't see - things like where the shadows are, and how the shapes look different from different angles. Learning how to see is probably the most important skill for any artist.

Then start putting on paper the things you see.

When you have one drawing finished, draw another one. Keep practicing, just like you would if you were going to try out for the school baseball team.

You can't expect to create a masterpiece on your first try - after all, even Michelangelo had to practice before he was good enough to paint the Sistine Chapel.

If you keep at it for at least 30 minutes every day, you'll probably find that you want some help. Your local school or city library should have some beginning drawing books.

Avoid books that teach you how to copy someone's cartoon. Even if you want to become a cartoonist someday, you still need to be able to create your own.

Choose a book that shows you how to see shadows, and how to know where to put the parts of a face, and how to make a drawing look 'alive.' These are the lessons that will make you a true artist someday.

Another way to learn how to draw better pictures is to search the Internet for websites that show artist's drawings. Pay attention to how different artists show shapes and shadows and expressions. Then see if you can make your own pictures feel that way.

And be sure to show your drawings to your friends and family. Showing off your creative spirit is what it's all about, isn't it?

How to Draw - Drawing With a Purpose - 2

Do you want to learn how to draw, but need a purpose for drawing? When I draw, I am one of those people who need to have a purpose. Drawing takes time. Although I find it very enjoyable, I still like to have some reason for spending the time. I need some sort of motivation.

Probably most people who draw, if the could make a little money right away, would have not problem getting motivated to draw more often. However, the purpose of this article is not to tell you how you can make money from your drawings. I am assuming that you are not even close to that point yet. You are the person who is still learning or looking for a way in which you can get motivated to start drawing again. You are the person who wants to get better at drawing before attempting to sell your first successful drawing.

Before you even start looking to monetize you must first develop your own style, technique and name. It takes quite awhile before people want you to draw something for them. So, here are some ways in which you can stay motivated.

The first way I get motivated is by selecting a photo that I like a lot, and really want to draw. Finding a good drawing photo may take some time, but it will be much more fun to draw. I have tried drawing some photos for people that were not great quality and have never been happy with the result.

What is a good drawing photo? Well, I happen to love photography and would eventually like to draw all of my own photos. Although I own an excellent camera, I am not always able to, or have the time to shoot the photos I want. A good drawing photo is one that you like immediately because the subject is in focus and the lighting is great.

Professional cameras are fun to play with because you can use a variety of lenses that allow you get that certain area in focus and everything else will be blurred. In a future article I will explain why you tend to like these types of photos better than others where everything is in focus. You draw what you see and not have to worry about making the drawing look better than the photo. That is why I enjoy drawing for photographers. I know that I am setting myself up for success rather than failure.

Maybe you do not think you are good enough yet, but at least work towards drawing something for someone else. This is the way I started drawing. Most of my drawing were for someone else. They were not anywhere near perfect then and still are not always the way I want them to look today. There is always something that just does not look right.

Share your work. See what people think. Tell people about what you do and share your passion. Accept criticism and learn from it. I use the criticism I receive on my drawings to improve my technique and style. Often others are better at pointing out errors or ways in which I can improve because they were not working with the drawing.

Alright, let's get started...

Activity 1 - Join a Group of Artists

If you have not already joined a group of drawing artists, I suggest you do so. You can learn from others and help and be helped.

Here are five places you may want to display your artwork

Drawspace.com

Artpapa.com

GFXartist.com

ratemydrawings.com

Activity 2 - Find a Photo for Drawing

Find a good photo. Hopefully you can find a good photo to draw that you yourself have taken. The internet may have many good drawing photos on it, but most of them will be copyright material. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THEM TO YOUR COMPUTER. Especially if you are going to display your drawings elsewhere on the web, make sure you have the written permission of the photographer. Make sure you make it clear to him or her what you are going to do with the image. Don't assume anything. If you are given permission, do not sell the drawing to anyone else.

Found a good photo? Joined at least one drawing group? Great! Now you are ready for the next article which is called How to Draw- Drawing Techniques (3). In this article we will explore different techniques that artists use. Try one of them out on the photo you have or will select.

How to Draw Cartoons - How to Draw a Flipbook

Drawing cartoons is as simple as being able to put some circles and rectangles together until they resemble the outline of the person or object you want to draw. Once you get the basic outline, then you just add a few details and your drawing will take the shape of your idea. But then what happens? Unlike the cartoons you can watch on TV, your drawings just sit there. That won't be the case when you learn how to draw cartoons, how to draw a cartoon flipbook.

What is a Cartoon Flipbook?

Flipbooks aren't all the same as they have traditionally been. Now, you can use computer software which will help you get your favorite drawings on the move. The old-fashioned way of drawing a flipbook is one that uses pencil and paper and can be entertaining for children and adults alike. It is also called a motion picture book and that is the idea. You want to create a picture and give it motion.

How Do I draw a flipbook?

Start with a pencil and a pad of plain paper that isn't too big to handle with ease. Next, think of something you want to see happen. You could make a football player catch the ball and go for the finish line. Two race cars could be in fierce competition around the track. Or you may want to do something simpler such as a dog getting a drink of water. Whatever you choose, think of how you want it to start. Think of the football player, for instance. Where will he be at the beginning? Jumping up to catch the ball? Now Decide how you want it to end. When he gets to the finish line, will he fall to the ground?  Or maybe you want to add a little victory dance before he finishes.

Some people draw both the first and last pictures to start, but you may have trouble working it out in the middle so that the pictures come out right. You do need start with the last page of the notebook and draw your first picture there. You need to start towards one side of the paper with your main character in order to make it progress across the page. When you draw your second drawing, you will want it to be slightly to the side of the first one. If you can see through the sheet you are drawing on, then you can use it as a guide to draw the next one. The fewer pages you want to draw to get to the last picture, the farther your subject needs to advance in each one.

You can color all of your drawings ones they are finished to give them a more professional look. To activate the picture, flip the pages of the book from the bottom up, as though thumbing through a book. Now you can draw cartoons that move!

Learning How to Draw - FAQ (Part 1)

Q: Hi I do pencil sketching. But I want to learn it professionally. I do not know to draw portraits, so I'm very interested in learning how to draw portraits. - Anita

Hi Anita. Drawing portraits can be tricky especially if you're new to drawing. Portraits are challenging to draw because of the many different parts that have to come together to portray a visual resemblance. For example, the eyes, ears, lips, nose and face have to be proportional to one another for a portrait to have a likeness of the subject.

More skillful portraitists know how to capture the essence of the face. That means being able to capture the fine details that portray the character of the face. So it's not as easy as just drawing some "Hollywood" faces that look plastic.

If you're just starting out, I suggest doing some homework first. Start by isolating each feature and practice until you're satisfied before moving on. Draw faces that you're already familiar with. You'll find that familiar faces are easier to draw.

Q: Hello Darren, I am 62 years old, and I think I have some talent to draw. The main problem is my hands and fingers, they are stiff and sore. The other thing is, just getting started. I am a fan of Fantasy Art and have collected others' pictures for years. - Naomi

Hi Naomi. Due to the condition of your fingers, I recommend that you avoid long and tiring drawing sessions. You may want to pick something that's quick to finish, or you may want to plan your drawing sessions so that you can complete a single drawing in several shorter sessions. Also, you may want to get someone to give you a hand massage before and after each drawing session.

If you're just getting started, start with something that's less complicated. Choose fantasy art that you really like drawing and keep practicing. You can choose one subject, and try not to refer to it as you draw. This will help improve your memory. If you forget the details, you can always come up with your own, since it's fantasy :)

Q: My major concern is finding time to make art. - Russell

Hi Russell. This is a very commonly asked question. If you're having a hard juggling your time, try to achieve something small first. If you still find it hard to cope, reduce your goals again and again until you're comfortable. No matter how busy you are, you can always find some time to do some sketches or doodles. Art is about a way of thinking. It's not how much time you spend. And you can always hone your thinking ability even with just a pencil and a piece of rough paper.

Drawing Tips and Techniques to Help You Learn How to Draw

Drawing is a fun hobby and in fact something that you can also make money with. If you want to learn drawing, there are also a few drawing tips and techniques that can help you learn fast and make better drawings. One good thing about this hobby is that, you don't need to have other expensive equipment, you can just have a pencil and a clean sheet of paper and you can learn how to draw right there.

If you are starting with a pencil, learn how to make vary the weight of your lines. You can make darker lines by pressing your pencil more or create lighter lines by lifting it up a bit. With varying weight of your lines you can emphasize major forms as well as finer lines in your drawing and make it more impressive.

One of the drawing tips and techniques that you may want to start with is to start drawing light lines. These very light lines will help guide you before starting to make a final drawing to avoid mistakes. Although it is normal to make mistakes in drawing and with light lines, you can easily correct them.

Having a light guide will also help you check the proportion of your drawing to make it fit the space that you have. One common mistakes of many is trying to draw right int the space and finding out afterwards that they don't have enough space for the hands o the feet, which can lead to having your subject too big for your space.

Avoid drawing in hard edges unless they are hard edges. Outlining them in hard lines can make your drawing flat, so start with finer lines and only use hard lines to what is suppose to be dark lines. Keep your pencils sharp so that you can easily make finer lines. You may need some blunt pencil for some lines and shadows too so you may also have some blunt ones ready as well.

Never rest your hands on your drawing or in the space that you still have to draw. Your hands can smudge your drawing and can damage it. No matter how clean are your hands, the moisture in it can make some parts of the paper you are working on hard for erasures later.

Learn the hatching technique in drawing. This is one technique that allows you to draw parallel lines to add the appearance of value o your drawings.

Of course, shading and highlighting are also important techniques in drawing and even with your pencil, you can actually learn these techniques to give depth and dimension to your drawings.

These are just a few drawing tips and techniques that you can start learning to make better drawings. If you are interested in drawing, you can also get a good resource where you can learn each step in detail and learn techniques step by step as well.

Learn How to Draw Objects in Perspective

If you want to learn how to draw objects in perspective you can take advantage of all of the programs that teach you exactly how to do this online. Some of the "learn how to draw perspective" programs are downloads and others take you right to a site that teaches you how to do it using step by step illustrations online.

Still nothing is more impressive than an artist that, without the aid of a computer software program about drawing perspective, can draw landscapes, buildings and people so that they look real.

Why is it so important to learn how to draw in perspective? Without any drawing perspective technique drawing just don't look realistic. They have a flattened look that lacks a point of view.

The main principle behind how to draw perspective is that objects up close are larger than those in the background. However drawing in perspective is not that easy as it is the angle of the chosen point of view that affects how realistic it looks.

The easiest way to draw is to use one point perspective. This means creating a vanishing point of perspective in your drawing which is a single point where all of the lines seem to converge to a distant point in a drawing.

Usually this vanishing point is located in the exact center of the drawing and just over the horizon line which is roughly where the paper would be if you folded it in half.

You can also get lessons in how to draw in two point perspective. This means that the object in the drawing has corners that are facing the viewer.

Expert artists and art teacher recommend that you use a very hard pencil like an HB to accomplish drawings done in one or two point perspective.

Some subjects are easier to draw than others, especially when it comes to one or two point perspective. To practice drawing this way try drawing a structure that appears to disappear into the horizon such as railroad tracks or a country road. The more angles you practice drawing the landscape or object from the better you will be at drawing perspective properly.

How to Draw Easy Cartoons - Simple Techniques to Learn Drawing

Although there are people who are born with a talent in drawing without even learning some steps and methods, you can however learn how to draw easy cartoons with the aid of a few resources that will teach you easy drawing.

If you are interested in learning how to draw easy cartoons, you can actually find a number of techniques to draw one. You can even draw cartoons with sticks or with just straight lines. You can also make cartoons with just the basic shape. Whether you want to use your cartoons as a visual aid in school or you want to draw cartoons for profit, even stick cartoons can be appealing for as long as you have a good character out of your cartoons.

Drawing with Sticks and Straight Line

One of the very easy way on how to draw easy cartoons is to use straight lines and a few circles. We all probably know how to draw stick figures but we can still enhance it by adding movements as well as creating an appealing character.

If you want to start with stick figures as your first steps towards drawing, you can use an oval shape for the head. Of course, an oval is just an imperfect circle, so you don't have to bother making it as perfectly done as possible. You can then make use of sticks or straight lines for the body, the arms and the legs.

Aside from the oval and stick, you can also add more accessories to your cartoons. You add a signature hair, dress or some other features that will make your cartoon stand out.

Although stick figures is an easy method on how to draw easy cartoons, you have to also keep in mind that there are also other considerations that you have to make. 3 - Artist's Secrets To Learning How To Draw When You Can't Draw Well

You can easily learn to draw. "But..." you will say in reply... "I can't even draw as well as a child at school" In reality it doesn't matter how bad your drawing is...

Let's list a few popular drawing subjects... A Car, A Dragon, A Wolf, A Tree, A Rose or other flowers, A Cat or a Dog, A Lion or a Tiger, A Horse or a Pig

Yes, it's difficult to draw a realistic Car. It's hard to draw a Dragon because they don't exist. And, an animal doesn't keep still unless they are asleep.

So... "How do you draw a picture when you can't draw well?" Here are 3 artist's secrets...

Use a grid to Copy
Use clear tracing paper to Trace
Use a projector to project an image

Even professional artists use any or all of these methods... I have used all of them to produce paintings and drawings. They can't make your drawings look perfect but they are great drawing guides that can help you.

Although you are unlikely to get a perfect copy the 3 methods are great for... Getting an idea of shape and form... Getting drawing layout right (repositioning objects and figures)... Increasing and reducing object size (Scaling)

So... "Where can you use the 3 copying methods...?

Imagine you want to draw portraits of your children as they grow up...

You will have photographs of them from the time they were babies through to leaving school. Why not use one of these photographs to learn to draw?

1. Use A Grid to Copy

Get some transparent graph paper and draw the outline of the face, the nose, the ears, the mouth and eyes.

To draw a picture the same size all you have to do is turn the paper over and draw around the outline with a pencil. To transfer the image to your drawing you turn the paper again to the top side and draw around the original pencil marks.

When you have finished the picture will be copied through to your drawing

2. Easy Image Enlargement

It is easy to enlarge the image... scale up using larger squares... use 10 squares for every 1 original square and you have increased the image size by a ratio of 10 to 1.

3. Use A Projector

Perhaps the easiest way to increase the scale of a photograph is to use a projector, projecting the image directly on to the drawing paper.

These techniques may be considered by some people as cheats... Do you care if they help you learn how to draw what you want?

How to Draw in 3D - 3 Simple Techniques You Can Use

If you love drawing, you may be exploring a lot of techniques as well as mediums that allow you to showcase your talent. Drawing cartoons for example is one fun way to use your love for drawings and can also be a profitable venture. You can also draw paintings, comic strips or even three-dimensional ones.

If you want to learn how to draw in 3D, you might need to learn a few techniques on how to make this effect. Of course, some people are just so talented that they may be able to draw things in 3D without even learning a few techniques but of course, if you want to learn the skill and you want to learn fast, here are three techniques that you might find useful.

1. Learning to draw perspective. Drawing things in perspective is one of the foundations to be able to master and learn how to draw in 3D. If you are drawing in perspective, objects closer to you appear larger while those farther away from you appear shorter or smaller. Practicing your eye to look at the perspective of objects will also help you draw them in perspective and give it a 3D effect.

To draw in perspective you can use parallel lines to create a 3D effect on an object, so that when you draw a square for example, you will not be making a flat square but a cube, which shows its different sides.

2. Shading and lighting. Another technique that you can use to create a three dimensional effect on your drawings is to make use of shading. In some cases you can also lighten a part of the subject to create a 3D effect. Shading is simply done by drawing dark parallel lines to make shadows. Cross hatching is also another technique in creating shades that also brings out its 3D effect. Instead of only parallel lines drawn together to create the shading, this technique uses crossing lines. Veiling is another technique used in creating shades to make the 3D effect.

3. Drawing what you see

If you are quite familiar with the two techniques above, you can also learn how to draw in 3D by simply drawing things around you. You can draw piled boxes, the stairs, draw a bottle and many other things you see around. Of course, you have to draw them as how you see them. Although this might not be easy at first, constant practice will help you hone your skills in learning how to draw things as you see them, of course, using your skills in shading or sketching in perspective as well.

These are just a few techniques to help you learn how to draw in 3D. However, you have to always remember that constant practice will hone your skills better and will allow you to master how to look at an object and sketching it just like how it appeared in reality.

How to Draw Cars - Beginner Tips & Tools for Success

Learning how to draw cars is not as difficult as you may believe. Many beginners when attempting to draw cars will fail at first because of that "I can't do it" mentality. They will see all of the details, the shadows and the highlights and become intimidated and lose confidence. In order to succeed, to really learn how to draw, you must remove all preconceived notions about drawing.

Learning how to draw is really a matter of breaking down what you see into smaller parts or shapes. You have to look at the picture as a smaller step by step process. When you break things down like this the problem at hand becomes easier to draw. But before you go off and start to draw those cool muscle or race cars, you really need to understand a bit more about the supplies you will need. How else are you going to draw those cool cars?

Having good supplies is definitely going to make it easier to draw and more enjoyable, but it won't make you a better artist. You must learn and understand the basics first. Quality equipment is an aid, but it is not a substitute for your skills or abilities.

The first thing you are going to need is a good surface to draw on. You will need a solid sturdy table, desk, or drafting table. Whatever you choose to draw on, make sure the surface does not wobble and is level. Do not settle for a cheap surface. It will only frustrate you and make things more difficult. Many artists like to work on a surface that is on a slight angle towards the artist which promotes a better posture. Being comfortable is very important.

Make sure you have good lighting. Learning how to draw cars is challenging enough. You do not need the frustration of poor lighting. Your lighting should be even so that there are no shadows or hot spots of light, so you may need more than one light source to draw with. There are specially made lamps for artists that produce light which mimics natural sunlight.

You can purchase these online or at art stores, but I have found that the professionally made lights for artists can be rather expensive. If you happen to live near a Home Depot or other home improvement center, try looking in their lighting department. I purchased my lamps there for under 20 dollars each.

As for what tools you should have on hand to draw with, there are no "One drawing tool fits all" formulas. You will have to experiment with different pens and pencils until you find the ones that are the most comfortable to draw cars with. It is probably best to have a variety of drawing tools on hand.

Many car artists have various pens, pencils, markers and even paints on hand to produce different effects. For instance, some car artists prefer to work with Prismacolor "Verithin" pencils for sketching fine lines and for light shading. Other artists prefer the convenience of mechanical pencils as there is no sharpening needed. Mechanical pencils are not the best for shading in areas however. So you see, having a variety of tools on hand to draw with is essential.

Paper is another item of personal choice. Again, you have to experiment. Just like pens and pencils, there are also a variety of drawing surfaces. Try your favorite pens and pencils on various surfaces. Drawing surfaces have different textures and thicknesses and your drawing mediums will behave differently depending on the surface and how you apply them. You may also find guides helpful to draw with. Some car artists prefer to use ellipses and straight edges to help create straight lines and circles, while others work free hand.

If you do not happen to live near any art supply stores, you can always purchase your supplies online. Just go to any major search engine and type in "drawing supplies" and you will find plenty of online shops. My recommendation is Misterart.com. I have been buying my supplies there for a few years now and my shipments are always delivered fast and in perfect condition.

I hope these tips and instructions have given you more insight on how to draw cars. The most important thing with drawing cars, or any art for that matter, is to never give up. Keep practicing. Practice every day if possible and keep a sketchbook of your work so that you can keep track of your progress. You will get the hang of this and learn how to draw cars.

How to Draw a Realistic Portrait

Drawing a realistic human portrait is probably one of the most difficult tasks for any artist. Even professional, well-known artists experience difficulties with drawing realistic portraits, not to speak of art students and amateurs who love drawing, enjoy the process and want to learn how to draw portraits.

So what does one need to draw portraits besides desire and a little bit of drawing talent?

learn the basics of drawing;
learn the basic proportions of a human face;
lots of practice!

In order to learn basics of drawing you can purchase and read specialized literature discussing drawing techniques, styles, tools etc.

As to the basic proportions of a human face, they are the following:

the distance from the chin to the eyes equals the distance from the eyes to the crown of the head (do not forget that you do not have to take into consideration a haircut in this case);
the distance from the hairline to the eyebrows equals the distance from the eyebrows to the tip of the nose and at the same time equals the distance from the tip of the nose to the chin;
the distance between eyes is actually the length of an eye itself;
the width of the nose is the distance between the eyes;
the length of the mouth is the distance between the eye pupils;
the length of ears equals the distance from the brows to the mouth line;
when drawing a half face (profile), the distance from the eye level to the chin equals the distance from the outer corner of an eye to the end of an ear.

The above face proportions are classical for an adult and can slightly vary depending on individual facial peculiarities.

The most common errors in realistic portrait drawing are caused by the failure to observe the above proportions. These errors are usually as follows:

a truncated skull;
too large eyes;
too small nose;
too small mouth;
too thin neck;
too small ears.

However such deviations in classical portrait proportions can be deliberately made for caricatures and cartoons drawing, and being able to make such "correct errors" in this case is also art as it is not an easy thing to accentuate and emphasize necessary details of a portrait in order to create a good looking caricature which at the same time allows model recognizing.

When drawing a realistic portrait, one must pay special attention to the following details of the model's face:

whether the lip corners are tilted up or down;
which lip is wider;
which internal or external corners of the eyes are higher;
shape of the face and cheekbones;
strands and hair around the face as they must be drawn very thoroughly and with as much details as possible.

The most important in learning to draw is constant practicing which is a must for improvement your drawing technique. Practicing a lot, you will soon notice that your portraits get more and more beautiful and resembling the model. Good luck in your learning to draw realistic portraits!

How to Draw Eyes Better

Probably the most fascinating and beautiful part of the human body to draw would be the eyes. Often the eyes reveal feelings that people try to hide. Most of us look at the eyes of someone to see if he/she is without a doubt sincere. And it is through the eyes that we see whether someone is happy or happy. When it comes to drawing a person's eyes you should capture the emotion of the subject making it look real. The challenge is to learn the steps on how to draw the eyes that will reveal the true emotion of your subject. This could require a great deal of patience to help make your own drawing as real as you possibly can. Let the emotion reveal all the way through your drawing by learning the steps on how to draw the eyes.

Let us start off by having our drawing tools and supplies ready. Have your pencil and drawing paper/sketch pad ready and thus we begin our drawing journey.

The first step in drawing the eyes is simply to observe the subject's eyes. Observe the details of the eyes, the shape and as well as observe the exact emotion of your subject to capture it all right into your sketch pad.

Then, when you are done capturing the shape and emotion of the eyes, make a light outline of the face with the eyes within it on your sketch pad. Outline eyes by sketching two oval shapes or round shape in the upper centre of the face, depending on your subject's eyes, which includes a space in the middle (for your nose).

Immediately after you draw the shape of the eye, make 3 light outline circles within the shape of the eye to get a highlight of the eye. Keep in mind to also add a tiny little triangular tear duct at the inner edge of the eye.

Proceed then to sketching the eyebrows over the upper portion of your outline eye shape. You may use a single stroke for drawing the eyebrows until it thickens with reference to your subject.

Now, you can start shading the pupil, the inner centre circle. Shade it just as darker as it should to create a more realistic drawing. Just after accomplishing this, lightly shade the eyelids as well as the surrounding areas.

Get started on sketching the lashes when you are finished shading the essential parts of the eye that requires shading. Eyelashes are generally not all alike, to come up with a realistic and lifelike eye keep an eye on the subject and sketch the eyelashes consistent with its curves as well as thickness. Remember that eyelashes onto the upper eyelid tend to be longer and thicker whilst eyelashes at the lower eyelid are shorter and thinner.

Lastly begin doing the final stroke to your drawing by adding details which will certainly emphasize the character of your subject. Erase unnecessary marks or traces right after completing the final touch.

The key step in making the eyes look real is generally by observing it and drawing it accordingly to fully grasp the details of the subject. It is somehow tricky to draw the eyes simply because we all have a different set of eyes. Emotions can influence your drawing. That is why it is best to be keen to every detail that you will see while drawing the eyes.

Drawing requires a great deal of practice to help you achieve a realistic outcome. So have an extra pencil and sketch pad ready for more practice. Learn the steps on how to draw the eyes and this will guide you in your drawing quest. Have a great time drawing.

Step by Step - How to Draw Dragons

Dragons have fascinated and terrified mankind since he first used the end of a burnt stick to sketch drawings on a cave wall. But, often, the idea of drawing a dragon is more daunting than the idea of coming face to face with one.

The truth is, drawing dragons can be simple, fun and fascinating. Here is a step-by-step approach that might help you.

1. How to Draw Dragons - Step 1: Find Inspiration

Many dragons seem to be a conglomerate of several different animals. They often have scales and fangs like snakes, more menacing teeth, like alligators and crocodiles. The can have head structures like lions, snakes or even horses. Wings like birds, bats or dinosaurs like pterodactyls.

So, decide the characteristics you want your dragon to have---big, imposing and powerful; swift, agile and tricky; or even old, wise and benevolent---and take a look at animals with similar traits. Look at the way their bodies are designed...how they move...what they look like when they're alert, when they're attacking, when they're sleeping.

This will provide a well-spring of ideas to draw upon when you're ready to draw.

2. How to Draw Dragons - Step 2: Lay the groundwork.

There are countless approaches to starting a drawing of any kind. Some people begin by breaking the subject down into simple geometric shapes and using that as a sort of framework to build on. Others try to lightly sketch out the silhouette until they get the right look, then they fill in the details. Still others start at one point, then draw out from there, adding in details as they go, giving the drawing a very organic feel.

There is no "right way" to do this. Play with the different approaches to see what works for you.

3. How to Draw Dragons - Step 3: Fill in the details

Once you have the basic structure figured out, it's time to fill in the detail. Add in scales or armor plates, horns, teeth, scars, smoke or fire if needed. Work a part of the background into the drawing.

These are the things that are going to give your dragon personality and really make the drawing your own. Don't be afraid to try something (that's what erasers are for). Nobody HAS to see it if you don't want them to.

4. How to Draw Dragons - Step 4: Add light and weight

Once you have all of the features of your dragon and your landscape in place, it's time to add an extra dimension of realism. Pick a direction for your light source---for example, imagine a lightbulb in the upper left-hand corner of your paper---and add in shadows on all of the edges opposite of that source. Add shadows to he back of the horns and teeth...the backs of the legs...under the belly...anywhere where light from your source wouldn't reach.

This will help make your dragon look more real, more three dimensional, and give it a sense of weight. It also helps set the tone and mood of the piece.

Now, naturally, it's difficult to fully grasp all of this from a simple text article. To see a collection of short videos that break down this process in different styles from different artists, visit http://drawingstepbystep.com/step-by-step-how-to-draw-dragons/

The idea of drawing has attracted people since ancient times. A sharp stone and a smooth crave wall was enough for the ancient men to caricature things around them.

For people who wants to learn how to draw caricatures, I'll give some detail about the drawing techniques and materials used by the professional caricaturists first and later give step by step instructions on how to draw caricatures so that you can follow the steps and start drawing caricatures. You will need the following tools when drawing caricatures:

good quality pencil; which should not be too hard or too soft, preferably H or HB pencil.
good quality eraser; preferably waxed and soft to erase without trace.
good quality drawing paper; should be good enough to resist the stroke impact of the pencil, and not to peel off. This paper is preferred by the professional cartoonists for its resistance against the ink when working over the caricature drawing drafts.
good quality ink; black Chinese or Indian ink.
good quality cartoon pen

Step 1 - Cut the image paper in appropriate size. This size depends on your choice; it should be smaller than a poster and bigger than stamp. The size of A4 paper is generally accepted.

Drawing a zombie face is something that gets easier with practice, each new sketch you do is a learning process that improves with time and zombies are quite popular to draw, so here we will go through the steps that you could follow to draw your very own zombie faces and apply what you learn to create lots of different zombies.

To draw our rotting zombies head, we need to remind ourselves of the genre, go and watch some of them zombie horror films and then come back, you'll find that there are lots of different undead facial possibilities to get you drawing them, the preferred method is to draw an uneven oval shape for the head on an A4 size piece of paper, fill the whole sheet if you have to and don't worry about the basic shape too much as this will most certainly change later in the drawing.

Mark a line down the middle of the oval head shape and a line across the nose area, this way you can draw in the eyes, ears, (if any) the nose and a rough draught sketch of the mouth, so later you can cut back on the flesh, to make it appear rotten and possibly show the teeth and the gum line which often looks quite cool on a zombie, a bit of hair can be sketched in too if you don't want a bald undead guy as your zombie character.

Now we have the basics, we need to work on these somewhat, the eyes become angry and almost evil looking, with one eye ball bulging out of its socket and more detail surrounds the zombie's features as it looks totally putrefied, the teeth are drawn in, as the lips look like they are hanging off, and the hair has been sketched in darker, it's up to you how far you go with blood drips and so on.

The next step is to ink the drawing if you prefer, just go over the pencil lines and fill in any dark areas with solid black ink or cross hatching, usually under the eyes and define the cheek bones if you want a portion of the skull to poke out.

Zombie face drawing is a great way to learn how to draw characters, so just have fun.

How to Draw Pictures - Beginning Artist Tips

New artists always want to know how to draw pictures that will look good. Getting great drawing results can be tricky when you are just starting out because practice does make your drawings much better with time, however there are a few basic tips that can help every new artist get better results right away.

1. Don't draw with light, sketchy lines. Try to commit to your lines on the page and use a darker pencil or even a pen. The less you erase and the more you let your mistakes happen, the more easily you can evaluate your drawing afterward to learn what worked and what didn't. If your lines are sketchy and unsure, you will not be able to tell what was successful.

2. Don't look at your artwork as a masterpiece as you are working on it. Look at it like a lesson. If you try to create something that looks perfect you will not be happy with your efforts, and you miss the opportunity to grow from the experience of trying the process. Every drawing you try is a step to getting better and more confident. Remember that you are learning how to draw pictures, not painting the Sistine Chapel...yet! Keep the process fun.

3. Although it is wonderful to draw both from real life scenes and photographs, it is easiest to draw from a photo because it is already flattened from 3D to 2D for you. Look at the main shapes- the circles, rectangles and triangles, etc.- that you see in the picture and lightly sketch them in first as a guide. Then use your darker pencil to develop them in your drawing to look more like the photograph.

4. If possible, work from black-and-white photographs or convert your color pictures to black-and-white with the help of an image editor or your printer settings. Your brain does not then have to convert the colors to black-and-white that way and you can concentrate on the difference of the shades of gray, from white to black. Most copy machines have settings that can convert color to black and white as well.

5. Start simple. Choose subjects that you enjoy, and find pictures that don't include a lot of unnecessary detail. Try to focus on one subject with a simple background.  You'll have better results that way.

6. Practice, practice, practice, and be easy on yourself. Let's face it, most things get better with practice. You can't expect to start something and have instant success. Perfectionism is a creativity killer and talks you out of trying things. Don't let the negative perfectionist get the better of you! One of the cardinal rules on how to draw pictures is "lighten up" and relax. Do into it with a beginner's mindset- willing to learn.

7. Keep a sketchbook and take it everywhere with you. I know that you can feel shy about drawing when other people look, but don't worry about what others think.  If it makes you feel really uncomfortable, draw where you won't have many onlookers. If you get a small sketchbook with lots of pages and keep a small bag with your in your car, you can turn waiting times into opportunities to practice your drawings. Just a simple kit that contains your sketchbook, pencil, eraser and pen, plus a photo or two you might like to try with you will increase your drawing opportunities tenfold. I take a small sketchbook with me wherever I go, and you would be surprised at the ten minutes here or twenty minutes there that you can find to draw in a given day. Think about the times you spend waiting for the doctor, bus or movie to start. Think about school car lines, or time spent waiting to meet a friend. Instead of texting or phoning someone, draw instead!

If you're just starting out and want to know how to draw pictures of the things you enjoy, I am hoping that this will spur you on to give drawing a try! It's not only an enjoyable pastime, it can even become part of your life and open your eyes up to the world in a whole new way.

How to Draw Portraits

Human faces have always fascinated artists and to be able to see and capture the likeness of someone using pencil and paper is a challenging and inviting prospect. To quote Frederick Franck in his book The Zen of Seeing, 1973: "When drawing a face, any face, it is as if curtain after curtain, mask after mask, falls away....until a final mask remains, one that can no longer be removed, reduced. By the time the drawing is finished, I know a great deal about that face, for no face can hide itself for long. But although nothing escapes the eye, all is forgiven beforehand. The eye does not judge, moralise, criticise. It accepts the masks in gratitude as it does the long bamboos being long, the goldenrod being yellow."

There are many great tips out there which you can use to help you draw realistic portraits and the great thing about art is that there is definitely no right or wrong with how you go about it and with the end result - it is the process and enjoying it that are important. Below I've outlined some tips that you can add to your "how to draw a portrait" checklist for when drawing portraits from the side profile.

Know the proportions of the human face from the side profile:

The distance from the bottom of the chin to the eye level is the same as the distance from the eye level to the top of the head.
The distance from the bottom of the chin to the eye level is the same as the distance from the corner of the eye to the back of the ear.
The bottom of the ear should be approximately in line with middle of the space between the bottom of the nose and the top of the lip. This invisible line is also the approximate place where the back of the neck reaches the skull.

Other tips:

At the start of the drawing just draw the shared edges that you can see of the subject. Different shades, tones, lights, and shadows can be added at the end.
Focus on and draw shapes and spaces to avoid falling into drawing symbols rather than what is actually in front of you.
Break the eye down into parts and just draw the shape as you see it of the white of the eye and then do the same for the shape of the eyeball.
Drawing hair is largely a light-shadow process and given enough clues the viewer can work out and in fact enjoys working out the texture and nature of the subjects hair.

As I said there is no right or wrong and plenty of other good tips and techniques you will learn to get better and better, and as with most things practice and repetition will build your skill - enjoy!

How To Draw By Using A Grid

Learning how to draw by using a grid is almost like using a shortcut.

It's things like grids that make drawing possible for people who despair that they'll never be able to draw. This process breaks drawings right down to baby steps.

I recommend you use a grid as an aid only. I wouldn't encourage you to depend on it all the time.

Grids break down a picture into manageable sized pieces. You only need to focus on one square at a time and, before you know it, you have a great drawing staring you in the face!

Here's what you need to do:-

1. Find a good, clear picture that you would like to copy.

2. Make a copy of this picture, if you don't want to damage your original.

3. On your copy, mark all four edges of the picture at half inch intervals. Use a black fine tip marker. Beginners should start with smaller squares, like one quarter inch. Take care with your measurements, it can have an adverse effect on your drawings if you make a mistake.

4. Connect all the marks from side to side and from top to bottom to create your grid.

5. Now draw a grid on your blank paper to the exact same measurements. Draw these lines very lightly, in pencil. You will be erasing these when you are finished.

6. Pick a square to commence copying from. I am right-handed, so I always start at the top left square. This way, I don't smudge my drawing.

Another good shortcut is to photocopy a grid onto a transparency. This will save you the time it takes to draw a grid on your picture. It also reduces the possibility of errors with measurements. Plus, you don't have to waste time getting a copy the original picture. Lots of good, positive reasons to get a transparency there!

I use blu-tack to stick my transparency onto my picture to keep it steady.

You can make this process easier if you start off using grids with the exact same measurements. That is, the grid you copy from and the grid you copy on to, should both be the same size. As you become more confident with the process, you can keep increasing the size of the grid until you no longer need the guide lines at all.

If you draw a grid on your picture to half inch measurements, and then draw a grid with one inch measurements on your blank paper, you will finish up with a larger drawing than the original. This also works in reverse, if you draw a larger grid on your original and a small grid on your blank paper, you get a smaller drawing.

Welcome to the world of drawing!

How to Draw a Car Step by Step - Learn How to Draw a Car Easily Here

I love drawing cars, it's a great feeling to see one of your drawings that looks real on a piece of paper. But my drawings looked terrible until I found a guide on how to draw a car step by step. If you've ever sat back and taken a look at one of your drawings and seen wobbly lines, bad proportions and something that doesn't deserve to be labeled a car, then I have some tips for you!

Now I won't give away all the secrets I learned in the how to draw a car step by step guide, but I'll tell you one of the processes I use now.

1. Draw Side View

Create a side view of the car you want to draw. Take your time with this because it will be the foundation of your drawing, if there's something wrong here, it will be hard to fix it up later. Use a light pencil, take your time and be patient. Even the professionals take time to create great drawings!

2. Project Perspective

Now pick a point on the page that you want to use as your perspective. Project lines from all the points of your side view, such as the corners and indents of the body. Make sure these lines are straight, use a ruler and a light pencil once again.

3. Create A 3D View

At this point you will choose a distance from the side view along your projected lines to start drawing the perspective view. It should look like a copy of your side view, that is shrunk down a bit. Once again take your time and make sure you get it right.

4. Connect The Dots!

Obviously now you will draw in the lines between the two side views of your car. Just like connect the dots! Now add all the little structure details that you can. Then we move on to the hard part...

5. Shading

This step is the most time consuming part in the how to draw a car step by step instructions, depending on how good you want it to look. You will need to use a variety of different pencils to achieve the contrast in tones needed to get a nice metallic look. To get a good grasp on this, I'd suggest you going out and looking how light plays on cars and imagining it in black and white. Apply this to your drawings and it will be easier to envisage how your car should look. Remember to leave the highlights of your car unshaded to use the natural white of the paper to create that shiny look.

Doing all these steps without someone to show exactly how it's done is hard, but going to art lessons can be expensive and time consuming. However, there is a guide that I mentioned that can speed this up for you.

If your interested in a complete guide that will give you video instructions on how to draw a car step by step and some extra tips click here: how to draw cars.

Have fun drawing those beasts!
