How to Draw a Classic Witch

The drawing of witches is something that can be achieved through the study of classic witches and learning how to draw the basics of one is the way to go for witch drawing.

First you start off with drafting some sketch ideas together, these need not be detailed as they can just serve as visual ideas and helpful references for your main witch drawing, I always try and do a good few sketches first, so that I can pick and choose how my design will look in the end. Thumbnail sketches help you better when you start to get an idea and work it through with quick drawings.

Then you select your best idea out of them sketches and start to develop that witch drawing by filling in some of the details like the hat, the features of the witches face and the black gown that classic witches wear, it is just about defining the features here and playing around with them at this stage as we want to build on our witch design by finding more design elements that work well.

If you take a good look online, maybe do a Google image search for classic witches or even black witches, this might bring up some good reference images for you to draw from. The details are important for your witch drawing to look like a witch and not something else entirely, an option could be to include a witches broom and a black cat somewhere against your drawing so that it relates to the subject.

After this step, you begin to strengthen the pencil lines to make them more solid and start to clean up some of the rough pencil marks, and then the sources of light you begin to work out where that is going to come from, you may add a few light sources so that light hits the character from a few angles and the dark areas are recessed within the witches clothing. This also sets the drawing up for the next optional step of inking your pencil drawing with a black fine line pen or something quite similar to darken everything and the rubbing out of the pencils graphite makes the drawing look very clean and professional.

You should have a good witch drawing now and one that you can colour if you wish later on with the standard green pale face complexion and black to grey mid tones on her clothing.

Step by Step, How to Draw Faces - The First, Most Important Step to Take

How do you draw faces step by step?

Well, there's a little more to it than simply drawing. You may not realize it, but our brain's do a lot more to sabotage our drawing skills than most people think.

And not just by the annoying part of us that repeatedly tells us to give up either. In fact, this only happens because another part of our brain's stops us drawing what we see, and instead draws what the brain expects to see.

Don't believe me?

OK, think of the image of a head for a second.

Got it? I bet what you're seeing in your mind is just a general shape of a head, with a few normal features like eyes, a nose, ears and a mouth. Right?

Could you draw that face? Probably. Could you make it look realistic? Probably not.

And it's not because you can't draw, but because your brain hasn't filled in any details for that mental image you've got there. In face, your brain likes to assign general "shapes" and "symbols" to everything it sees.

And when we're trying to draw photorealistic faces...well, at best, it doesn't help. Usually though, it does a right number on us, and we end up drawing something....that's not really a face at all.

If you've tried drawing a face before, you probably know what I mean by that. Not good, is it?

OK, grab a picture of someone. Don't draw it yet.

Turn it upside down. Now draw it.

Don't worry about how badly you think you're doing. No-one starts as a master, and everyone who gets into drawing needs to go through this same thing.

Suddenly, it has no idea what you're drawing, and you're free to draw what you actually see. It will seem very weird to draw an upside down face, but trust me, it will only help you become the amazing artist you've always wanted to be.

It will likely take you a while to get the upside down details of the face correct, even to get the upside down eyes, mouth and everything else there is on a human face right.

But of course, turning a picture upside down isn't gonna turn you into an expert artist all by itself.

If you want to learn how to draw, you don't just want know how to do "nice" drawings, and you don't want to learn how to copy somebody else's drawings. You want to create great drawings of your very own, don't you?

It actually takes less magic than most people think.

I don't know who started the myth that only a few especially talented people can learn how to draw. There are even some art teachers out there who believe that.

But if you learned how to draw the alphabet, and are able to write a sentence that other people can read, you can learn how to draw. It just takes lots of practice, and some guidance from people who have learned a few tricks.

In a way it's a lot like learning to play baseball - you need to train your eye to see better than you ever have before, and you need to train your fingers and hands to move the way you want them to.

The first time you took a swing at a baseball, you probably missed. So don't expect to become a professional artist overnight.

Now, does that mean that everyone who has the patience and the willingness to learn will become a famous artist?

No, not necessarily. It means that if you are willing to practice and to make mistakes, you will very soon be drawing far better than just about anyone you know, and your friends and family and teachers will be amazed.

People may even ask you for copies of your drawings, beg you to make special ones just for them, and request that you make drawings for the school newsletter or your club's brochure.

So even if you don't become world famous, you can still get a huge amount of personal satisfaction from your drawings. You can also give wonderful, thoughtful gifts to people you care about, without spending hardly any money.

Materials

It doesn't cost hardly anything to learn to draw and create wonderful works of art. To start out, all you need is some cheap paper without lines (copy paper is fine) and some pencils. The #2 pencils that are used in schools are perfectly OK - you don't need to go to the art store and buy special ones.

You should find a good eraser, though, because the ones that come with your pencils are not big enough, and soon wear out.

That's it! That's all the materials you need to draw.

What's the first thing you need to do? Find something that you would enjoy drawing. It should be something fairly simple, like a cup or a book.

Sit and look at this object very closely, and notice things you usually don't see - things like where the shadows are, and how the shapes look different from different angles. Learning how to see is probably the most important skill for any artist.

Then start putting on paper the things you see.

When you have one drawing finished, draw another one. Keep practicing, just like you would if you were going to try out for the school baseball team.

You can't expect to create a masterpiece on your first try - after all, even Michelangelo had to practice before he was good enough to paint the Sistine Chapel.

If you keep at it for at least 30 minutes every day, you'll probably find that you want some help. Your local school or city library should have some beginning drawing books.

Avoid books that teach you how to copy someone's cartoon. Even if you want to become a cartoonist someday, you still need to be able to create your own.

Choose a book that shows you how to see shadows, and how to know where to put the parts of a face, and how to make a drawing look 'alive.' These are the lessons that will make you a true artist someday.

Another way to learn how to draw better pictures is to search the Internet for websites that show artist's drawings. Pay attention to how different artists show shapes and shadows and expressions. Then see if you can make your own pictures feel that way.

How to Draw - Drawing With a Purpose - 2

Do you want to learn how to draw, but need a purpose for drawing? When I draw, I am one of those people who need to have a purpose. Drawing takes time. Although I find it very enjoyable, I still like to have some reason for spending the time. I need some sort of motivation.

Probably most people who draw, if the could make a little money right away, would have not problem getting motivated to draw more often. However, the purpose of this article is not to tell you how you can make money from your drawings. I am assuming that you are not even close to that point yet. You are the person who is still learning or looking for a way in which you can get motivated to start drawing again. You are the person who wants to get better at drawing before attempting to sell your first successful drawing.

Before you even start looking to monetize you must first develop your own style, technique and name. It takes quite awhile before people want you to draw something for them. So, here are some ways in which you can stay motivated.

The first way I get motivated is by selecting a photo that I like a lot, and really want to draw. Finding a good drawing photo may take some time, but it will be much more fun to draw. I have tried drawing some photos for people that were not great quality and have never been happy with the result.

What is a good drawing photo? Well, I happen to love photography and would eventually like to draw all of my own photos. Although I own an excellent camera, I am not always able to, or have the time to shoot the photos I want. A good drawing photo is one that you like immediately because the subject is in focus and the lighting is great.

Professional cameras are fun to play with because you can use a variety of lenses that allow you get that certain area in focus and everything else will be blurred. In a future article I will explain why you tend to like these types of photos better than others where everything is in focus. You draw what you see and not have to worry about making the drawing look better than the photo. That is why I enjoy drawing for photographers. I know that I am setting myself up for success rather than failure.

Maybe you do not think you are good enough yet, but at least work towards drawing something for someone else. This is the way I started drawing. Most of my drawing were for someone else. They were not anywhere near perfect then and still are not always the way I want them to look today. There is always something that just does not look right.

Share your work. See what people think. Tell people about what you do and share your passion. Accept criticism and learn from it. I use the criticism I receive on my drawings to improve my technique and style. Often others are better at pointing out errors or ways in which I can improve because they were not working with the drawing.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD THEM TO YOUR COMPUTER. Especially if you are going to display your drawings elsewhere on the web, make sure you have the written permission of the photographer. Make sure you make it clear to him or her what you are going to do with the image. Don't assume anything. If you are given permission, do not sell the drawing to anyone else.

Found a good photo? Joined at least one drawing group? Great! Now you are ready for the next article which is called How to Draw- Drawing Techniques (3). In this article we will explore different techniques that artists use. Try one of them out on the photo you have or will select.

How to Draw Cartoons - How to Draw a Flipbook

Drawing cartoons is as simple as being able to put some circles and rectangles together until they resemble the outline of the person or object you want to draw. Once you get the basic outline, then you just add a few details and your drawing will take the shape of your idea. But then what happens? Unlike the cartoons you can watch on TV, your drawings just sit there. That won't be the case when you learn how to draw cartoons, how to draw a cartoon flipbook.

What is a Cartoon Flipbook?

Flipbooks aren't all the same as they have traditionally been. Now, you can use computer software which will help you get your favorite drawings on the move. The old-fashioned way of drawing a flipbook is one that uses pencil and paper and can be entertaining for children and adults alike. It is also called a motion picture book and that is the idea. You want to create a picture and give it motion.

How Do I draw a flipbook?

Start with a pencil and a pad of plain paper that isn't too big to handle with ease. Next, think of something you want to see happen. You could make a football player catch the ball and go for the finish line. Two race cars could be in fierce competition around the track. Or you may want to do something simpler such as a dog getting a drink of water. Whatever you choose, think of how you want it to start. Think of the football player, for instance. Where will he be at the beginning? Jumping up to catch the ball? Now Decide how you want it to end. When he gets to the finish line, will he fall to the ground?  Or maybe you want to add a little victory dance before he finishes. 

Some people draw both the first and last pictures to start, but you may have trouble working it out in the middle so that the pictures come out right. You do need start with the last page of the notebook and draw your first picture there. You need to start towards one side of the paper with your main character in order to make it progress across the page. When you draw your second drawing, you will want it to be slightly to the side of the first one. If you can see through the sheet you are drawing on, then you can use it as a guide to draw the next one. The fewer pages you want to draw to get to the last picture, the farther your subject needs to advance in each one. 

You can color all of your drawings ones they are finished to give them a more professional look. To activate the picture, flip the pages of the book from the bottom up, as though thumbing through a book. Now you can draw cartoons that move!

Hi Anita. Drawing portraits can be tricky especially if you're new to drawing. Portraits are challenging to draw because of the many different parts that have to come together to portray a visual resemblance. For example, the eyes, ears, lips, nose and face have to be proportional to one another for a portrait to have a likeness of the subject.

More skillful portraitists know how to capture the essence of the face. That means being able to capture the fine details that portray the character of the face. So it's not as easy as just drawing some "Hollywood" faces that look plastic.

If you're just starting out, I suggest doing some homework first. Start by isolating each feature and practice until you're satisfied before moving on. Draw faces that you're already familiar with. You'll find that familiar faces are easier to draw.

Hi Naomi. Due to the condition of your fingers, I recommend that you avoid long and tiring drawing sessions. You may want to pick something that's quick to finish, or you may want to plan your drawing sessions so that you can complete a single drawing in several shorter sessions. Also, you may want to get someone to give you a hand massage before and after each drawing session.

If you're just getting started, start with something that's less complicated. Choose fantasy art that you really like drawing and keep practicing. You can choose one subject, and try not to refer to it as you draw. This will help improve your memory. If you forget the details, you can always come up with your own, since it's fantasy :)

Keep your pencils sharp so that you can easily make finer lines. You may need some blunt pencil for some lines and shadows too so you may also have some blunt ones ready as well.

Never rest your hands on your drawing or in the space that you still have to draw. Your hands can smudge your drawing and can damage it. No matter how clean are your hands, the moisture in it can make some parts of the paper you are working on hard for erasures later.

Learn the hatching technique in drawing. This is one technique that allows you to draw parallel lines to add the appearance of value o your drawings.

Of course, shading and highlighting are also important techniques in drawing and even with your pencil, you can actually learn these techniques to give depth and dimension to your drawings.

Learn How to Draw Objects in Perspective

The main principle behind how to draw perspective is that objects up close are larger than those in the background. However drawing in perspective is not that easy as it is the angle of the chosen point of view that affects how realistic it looks.

The easiest way to draw is to use one point perspective. This means creating a vanishing point of perspective in your drawing which is a single point where all of the lines seem to converge to a distant point in a drawing.

Usually this vanishing point is located in the exact center of the drawing and just over the horizon line which is roughly where the paper would be if you folded it in half.

You can also get lessons in how to draw in two point perspective. This means that the object in the drawing has corners that are facing the viewer.

Expert artists and art teacher recommend that you use a very hard pencil like an HB to accomplish drawings done in one or two point perspective.

Some subjects are easier to draw than others, especially when it comes to one or two point perspective. 1. Use A Grid to Copy

Get some transparent graph paper and draw the outline of the face, the nose, the ears, the mouth and eyes.

To draw a picture the same size all you have to do is turn the paper over and draw around the outline with a pencil. To transfer the image to your drawing you turn the paper again to the top side and draw around the original pencil marks.

When you have finished the picture will be copied through to your drawing

2. Easy Image Enlargement

It is easy to enlarge the image... scale up using larger squares... use 10 squares for every 1 original square and you have increased the image size by a ratio of 10 to 1.

3. Use A Projector

Perhaps the easiest way to increase the scale of a photograph is to use a projector, projecting the image directly on to the drawing paper.

3. Drawing what you see

If you are quite familiar with the two techniques above, you can also learn how to draw in 3D by simply drawing things around you. You can draw piled boxes, the stairs, draw a bottle and many other things you see around. Of course, you have to draw them as how you see them. Although this might not be easy at first, constant practice will help you hone your skills in learning how to draw things as you see them, of course, using your skills in shading or sketching in perspective as well.

These are just a few techniques to help you learn how to draw in 3D. However, you have to always remember that constant practice will hone your skills better and will allow you to master how to look at an object and sketching it just like how it appeared in reality.

Make sure you have good lighting. Learning how to draw cars is challenging enough. You do not need the frustration of poor lighting. Your lighting should be even so that there are no shadows or hot spots of light, so you may need more than one light source to draw with. There are specially made lamps for artists that produce light which mimics natural sunlight.

You can purchase these online or at art stores, but I have found that the professionally made lights for artists can be rather expensive. If you happen to live near a Home Depot or other home improvement center, try looking in their lighting department. I purchased my lamps there for under 20 dollars each.

As for what tools you should have on hand to draw with, there are no "One drawing tool fits all" formulas. You will have to experiment with different pens and pencils until you find the ones that are the most comfortable to draw cars with. It is probably best to have a variety of drawing tools on hand.

Many car artists have various pens, pencils, markers and even paints on hand to produce different effects. For instance, some car artists prefer to work with Prismacolor "Verithin" pencils for sketching fine lines and for light shading. Other artists prefer the convenience of mechanical pencils as there is no sharpening needed. Mechanical pencils are not the best for shading in areas however. So you see, having a variety of tools on hand to draw with is essential.

Paper is another item of personal choice. Again, you have to experiment. Just like pens and pencils, there are also a variety of drawing surfaces. Try your favorite pens and pencils on various surfaces. Drawing surfaces have different textures and thicknesses and your drawing mediums will behave differently depending on the surface and how you apply them. You may also find guides helpful to draw with. Some car artists prefer to use ellipses and straight edges to help create straight lines and circles, while others work free hand.

If you do not happen to live near any art supply stores, you can always purchase your supplies online. Just go to any major search engine and type in "drawing supplies" and you will find plenty of online shops. My recommendation is Misterart.com. How to Draw a Realistic Portrait

Drawing a realistic human portrait is probably one of the most difficult tasks for any artist. Even professional, well-known artists experience difficulties with drawing realistic portraits, not to speak of art students and amateurs who love drawing, enjoy the process and want to learn how to draw portraits.

So what does one need to draw portraits besides desire and a little bit of drawing talent?

learn the basics of drawing;
learn the basic proportions of a human face;
lots of practice!

In order to learn basics of drawing you can purchase and read specialized literature discussing drawing techniques, styles, tools etc.

As to the basic proportions of a human face, they are the following:

the distance from the chin to the eyes equals the distance from the eyes to the crown of the head (do not forget that you do not have to take into consideration a haircut in this case);
the distance from the hairline to the eyebrows equals the distance from the eyebrows to the tip of the nose and at the same time equals the distance from the tip of the nose to the chin;
the distance between eyes is actually the length of an eye itself;
the width of the nose is the distance between the eyes;
the length of the mouth is the distance between the eye pupils;
the length of ears equals the distance from the brows to the mouth line;
when drawing a half face (profile), the distance from the eye level to the chin equals the distance from the outer corner of an eye to the end of an ear.

The above face proportions are classical for an adult and can slightly vary depending on individual facial peculiarities.

The most common errors in realistic portrait drawing are caused by the failure to observe the above proportions. These errors are usually as follows:

a truncated skull;
too large eyes;
too small nose;
too small mouth;
too thin neck;
too small ears.

However such deviations in classical portrait proportions can be deliberately made for caricatures and cartoons drawing, and being able to make such "correct errors" in this case is also art as it is not an easy thing to accentuate and emphasize necessary details of a portrait in order to create a good looking caricature which at the same time allows model recognizing.

When drawing a realistic portrait, one must pay special attention to the following details of the model's face:

whether the lip corners are tilted up or down;
which lip is wider;
which internal or external corners of the eyes are higher;
shape of the face and cheekbones;
strands and hair around the face as they must be drawn very thoroughly and with as much details as possible.
